At Smile for Life, we work towards giving children of the lower strata of society a means to face the world full of challenges. Our activities include not only in trying to provide basic education to the child but also to give him/her an all round development.
Education
As our vision “Project EduBillion – Vision 2020, Each One Teach Ten” indicates, our dream is to ensure that one literate individual should make the effort of teaching at least ten children. In this way by the year 2020 there would be a billion children in India who would have been educated. Education enables a child to think rationally, to be understanding, to be more responsible and to make his/her own decisions.
Teaching
At Smile for Life, we use informal and activity based methods of teaching English, mathematics, science and life-skills - interactive sessions, discussions, experiments, reading etc. Through this method, a child is more involved and his interest in the subject grows. There is group work, sharing, and exchange of ideas allowing the child to be creative and express freely.
Currently, Smile for Life has adopted 2 Government schools in Secunderabad and follows this method of teaching the children with the help of volunteers from a nearby college.
Torch bearers
Reading is another habit which is being inculcated among the children. Through reading, a child’s learning process is fostered and thirst for knowledge quenched. Smile for Life has conducted 2 Used Book Drives and has collected over 300 English books for children – text books, storybooks, comics, general knowledge books etc. These books have been classified and documented and a library has been recently opened in an orphanage in Hyderabad. Volunteers visit the orphanage at regular intervals and impart a special reading program to the children which encourages independent reading. More such book drives to build libraries at unaided schools and orphanages are in the offing
Reformation
It is a well known fact that the attitude of a child and the way he/she behaves, is determined during a child's formative years. It is common sight to find children of lower incomes being more prone to violent behavior. They face trauma due to the harsh realities of life they undergo. This results in these children ending up with an attitude of procuring everything not caring about its means but only its ends. Deprivation of the comforts which the more privileged children enjoy, brings on anti social behaviour and their outlook towards life becomes negative.
them to improve their communication, problem solving and leadership skills, thereby teaching them sportsmanship and humility to building character and a sense of self-worth. Activities such as team sports, science experiments, role-play and theatre, story telling, life-skill games etc are organised which will help children not only to change their behaviour but to discover their talents and abilities and develop and acquire new skills and knowledge
